CLIMATE

Based in the Köppen climate classification [2] Cyprus, and especially the south-west part of Cyprus (Paphos district) have a dry-summer or Mediterranean climate (referred to as Csa type, Figure 4).

Figure 4 According to the Köppen climate classification Cyprus belongs to Csa type.

In detail, in Csa type, term “C” means that the average temperature for the coldest month fluctuates between 18 to 30C and the average temperature of the hottest month is above 100C, term “s” explains that the rainfall of the driest month is under 30mm and 1/3 of the rainfall of the wettest month and finally term “a” indicates that the average temperature for the hottest month is above 220C.

Thus Paphos area has an ideal Mediterranean climate with mild short winters and hot long summers which are stretched between mid-May to mid-October. The winters are quite short and not too cold and the majority of rain falls during this season (December to February). As the New Paphos is located along the coast, a breeze affects the temperature especially during summer. Finally the statistics for Paphos area (Table 1) for the last 38 years is clearly shown the dry-summer climate.
